What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound derived from the hemp plant. The therapeutic possibilities of CBD are being tested by the medical field around the world. However, it is important to note there are very few, if any, well controlled studies for individual conditions including vein disease.
CBD is a safe, non-addictive substance, unique to cannabis. CBD is closely related to another important medicinally active cannabinoid: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that causes the high that cannabis is famous for. Unlike THC, CBD does not make a person cause intoxication and lead to a euphoric “high.” This is because CBD does not affect the same receptors as THC.
How does CBD work on pain?
Importantly, the human body has a regulatory system, the endocannabinoid system (ECS), that receives and translates signals from cannabinoids. It also produces some cannabinoids of its own, which are called endocannabinoids. The endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes that affect our everyday experience – our mood, our energy level, our intestinal fortitude, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more.
It is for this reason, that scientist and patients-alike are interested in mimicking and increasing the effects of these compounds synthesized by our bodies through CBD.
Does CBD have a role in spider and varicose vein disease?
In vein disease, we are most interested in the anti-inflammatory effect of CBD as well as the effect it is postulated to have on circulation. In chronic pain, researchers have compiled the results of multiple systematic reviews covering numerous small studies. Their research concluded that there is substantial evidence that cannabis is an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults. Studies also show that CBD oil acts as a powerful sleep inducer that allows chronic pain sufferers to get a full night’s sleep.
Patients with severely disrupted glutamate levels often complain the most about lack of sleep. CBD oil may actually help to enhance glutamate signaling and stabilize dopamine levels to lessen symptoms of pain and another common symptom of varicose veins, restless leg syndrome.
Despite this, it is important to note two very important aspects prior to using CBD.First, these studies are still very small and do not provide any conclusive evidence of benefit. Simply, the effect of these medications have not been tested rigorously with the scientific method. Second, the effective or recommended doses are not well documented.
Thus, in using CBD, it is best to start low and work up to the minimally effective dose. Caution should be taken when using other pharmaceuticals as CBD can impact the metabolism of other prescribed medications.
How does one take CBD for varicose veins?
The two most common ways to use CBD for vein disease treatment are ingested forms and applied oils.Hemp oil (derived from hemp seeds) contains omega-3 fatty acids which can thin your blood and can help reduce and prevent the appearance of varicose veins. It does not contain any THC or CBD because it is specifically extracted from the hemp seed. The use of hemp oil has been reported to decrease the local itching, burning and pain from spider veins and can be applied to the skin directly.Anecdotally, it has also been reported to improve the appearance of spider veins.
However, it’s important to remember that any omega-3 product applied directly to your skin should not be the only treatment you take for varicose veins.Symptoms of vein disease including pain, cramps, restless legs, and heaviness may be a sign of venous insufficiency. These symptoms should be considered for evaluation by a board-certified vein specialist.
The Mayo clinic recommends dosages based on the available science and expert opinions. In the case of chronic pain, 2.5 mg to 20 mg of CBD daily has been considered. There is no specific study to address the pain specific to varicose veins, however many patients with venous insufficiency suffer from the same common issues: chronic pain and restless leg.In using CBD for spider veins or varicose veins, it is best to consider treatment under the supervision of a vein specialist.
In many cases, the use of hemp oil applications or CBD oil will be complementary to a more well considered plan that address both your cosmetic and medical concerns. Any time, CBD is considered, it is important to start low and work up to the minimally effective dose. Caution should be taken when using other pharmaceuticals as CBD can also impact the metabolism of other prescribed medications.
