Who Is Dr. Claudia Rios?

Dr. Claudia Rios is a pioneer in cryo-sclerotherapy, which quickly turned spider vein treatments into pain-free, minimally invasive, outpatient procedures in 2000.

She is a member of the American College of Phlebology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM). She received her medical degree from the Universidad Libre De Cali in Columbia and completed her internal medicine residency at Jacobi Medical Center—Albert Einstein School of Medicine.  She subsequently specialized in vascular medicine to treat spider veins and varicose veins.  She previously worked at the Vein Treatment Center in NYC with world-renowned venous expert, Dr. Luis Navarro.  In 2021, after 10 years at the Vein Treatment Center, she joined as a partner at The Vein Specialist Centers. 

Notable accomplishments include a visit in 2019 with the Hackett Hemwall Patterson Foundation on a vein treatment mission trip to Honduras.  In 2023, she has been invited once again to provide varicose vein care to  critically needed areas of the underserved. These experiences have Dr. Rios a deep understanding of the negative effects of venous disease impacting the everyday life of patients.  We are incredibly humbled to have Dr. Rios as a physician partner at VSC.

The truth is there are many excellent vein doctors around New York, however there ars some important distinctions.  Many vein clinics are not what they advertise.  

DID YOU KNOW?

Many vein practices advertise board-certified doctors for vein treatment, however they might have little or no experience in vascular procedures.  A board-certification should be specific to vascular medicine.  Would you want a board-certified ophthalmologist treating  your varicose veins?  Probably not!  

Use the following 5 criteria to judge whether or not a particular physician is right for your vein treatment. 

• Does Your Doctor Have Vascular Training?

A residency or fellowship-trained doctor in vascular surgery, interventional cardiology or radiology is the best choice.  Alternative pathways to vascular competency include ABVLM certification as noted above.  A vein doctor with this backgroung will understand normal and abnormal vascular anatomy and how treatment can provide benefit.  

• Pain Doctors and Physiatrists

Advertising as vascular surgeons, but definitely not vascular trained.  It is not in the scope of training for pain management physicians or physiatrists to perform vein procedures.  A pain management residency focuses on treating musckuloskeletal pain, not vascular conditions.  Weekend courses cannot possibly provide the experience of a well-trained vascular specialist.  

If you are under the care of a pain doctor or other non-vascular physician performing vein treatments, we advise checking their certification through alternative pathways like the American Board of Vascular and Lymphatic Medicine. 

• Verify Online Reputation

This is one reason why you can’t just search a phrase like “the best vein doctor near me” on the internet and choose the top result.

Look carefully for honest feedback.  Most reputable clinics maintain a rating above 4 stars.  Be sure to select your filters for top rated.   However, be cautious of overly positive reviews that don’t have a natural tone.
